Fitness at Home

#1 Deck of Fitness

I was posting a fun family fitness activity for my physical education students when it occurred to me that some of my other contacts might enjoy the activity as well. It was then I decided to start a blog to share my fun fitness finds with you! Many of us enjoy meeting others at a fitness center, park, school, work, or some other place. However, we have been asked to stay at home due to the current virus crises, yet we can continue to maintain or improve our fitness at home with our family!

My first fitness find to share with you is called, "Deck of Fitness".  All you need is a deck of cards and willing participants! I will summarize the activity here, but you can find it in it's entirety at  openphysed.org.  Just click on the, "At Home,"  tab and you will find numerous fitness activities to do at home. The website is designed to provide resources such as curriculum and activities to physical educators, but you don't have to be a physical educator to benefit from the activities on this website. You can go directly to the page by following this link: https://openphysed.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/OPEN-At-Home-06-DeckOfFitness.pdf.

A quick summary of the activity follows. For round 1 you draw one card and everyone will do the same activity and for  round 2 each person will draw their own card and perform the activity accordingly.  You will do the activity the number of times shown on the card. The activities are according to the suit you draw and is as follows:

Hearts is Jumping Jacks
Clubs is Push-Ups
Diamonds is Invisible Jump Rope Jumps
Spades is Squats

A quick word of caution on the squats is to make sure you protect your knees by preventing them from going forward. Here is a great demonstration of the squat exercise on a YouTube video that I found today.  By the way, squats, are excellent exercises for the lower back!

If you try the activity, I would love to hear feedback from you on how it went. Also, let me know what you think of the website that I told you about.

Have fun!
